Do I Need a Breast Augmentation Revision?

Although an effective procedure for changing the appearance of the breasts, breast augmentation results are not designed to last a lifetime. Many patients will notice changes in their implants within 10 to 15 years influenced by aging, weight fluctuations, and other natural causes. Breast augmentation results are long lasting but not forever. Some women choose to undergo a breast augmentation revision to correct unwanted changes caused naturally or by complications. Others want a breast revision because they are unsatisfied with the results of their augmentation. Dr. Taylor can perform breast augmentation revision to help patients achieve breasts that are complementary to their individual anatomy and goals.
Are You Ready for New Breast Implants?
There are many reasons women undergo breast revision surgery. Breast augmentation revision is a safe surgery and offers patients a chance to take advantage of the newer technologies and implants that have become available. Dr. Taylor performs most breast revision operations on an outpatient basis in his office operating room under minimal sedation anesthesia. He can help women address the following concerns with their breast implants:
- Breast implant sizing: Some women are not happy with their original results due to their breasts being too big or too small or due to having experienced changes in volume caused by natural factors, such as pregnancy or weight loss. The size of saline breast implants can be adjusted by adding or removing saline solution, and silicone breast implants can be switched out for new ones of a different size or shape.
- Capsular contracture: This complication occurs when the tissue capsule around the implant starts to contract and squeeze the implant, causing it to harden and become misshapen. Fortunately, with newer technology in operative techniques and implant design, this complication has become much less common. When this does occur, the treatment is to remove the old implants, remove all the scar tissue (capsulectomy), and place new implants, preferably under the muscle.
- Malposition: Sometimes, the implants shift over time, which can cause asymmetry or make the breasts unflattering to the body. Dr. Taylor can correct this issue by repositioning the implants into their designated, more attractive position.
- Poor implant placement: Breast implants can be placed either under or over the breast muscle. A patient may feel that their placement option does not fit their body goals. The breast implants can be moved into a more appropriate position.
- Rupture or leakage: Saline breast implants can start to leak, causing the breast implants to visibly deflate. An MRI is often needed to detect a rupture or leak in silicone breast implants. The typical lifespan of an implant is 10 to 15 years.
- Breast implant type: Some patients may not be satisfied with the type of breast implant they chose and decide to have them switched out to better fit their needs.
Patients who are interested in breast augmentation revision should be in good health, have realistic expectations, and refrain from smoking before and after the procedure. Dr. Taylor can evaluate your body to help you decide if you are ready for breast revision surgery. It is important that patients wait at least six months to one year after their first surgery before undergoing revision unless it is necessary sooner due to a complication.
