Implant Placement Options for Breast Augmentation

Posted March 14, 2018 in Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation surgery gives you the opportunity to enhance the appearance of your breasts according to your desired specifications. If your breast shape has changed due to aging, weight loss, or pregnancy, or you would just prefer to increase your cup size, breast augmentation is a proven way to obtain the figure you have always wanted. Breast augmentation is a customizable procedure, so regardless of what your ideal breast shape is, this procedure can be tailored to meet those needs. While Dr. Taylor utilizes multiple techniques for insertion of the implants, certain incision locations are more appropriate for specific types of techniques.

Incision locations

Inframammary

Breast Augmentation Dr TaylorThis incision is made in the crease under the breast (also called the inframammary fold). It will measure approximately one to two inches, depending on the type of implant used. This incision location is beneficial because it provides Dr. Taylor a better understanding of the underlying breast tissue. This gives him optimal visibility and allows for more precise implant placement. The ability to use a larger incision also means that he can place larger silicone implants more easily. The incision (and subsequent scar) is not likely to be visible but can be hidden under a bra or bathing suit top. The best candidates for this incision: large natural breasts with deep creases, very small areola, patients who value breastfeeding highly, patients with lighter skin types, and patients who do not want a scar near the nipple.

Periareolar

The periareolar incision is made around the lower edge of the areola. This incision is almost invisible due to its placement between the dark coloration of the areola and the surrounding skin. This scar heals the nicest of all. The use of this technique is also ideal for placement of implants since it allows for clear access to the pocket where the implants will be placed. It also makes positioning the implant after insertion easier. The best candidates for this incision: dark skin types, larger areola, small natural breasts, and patients who have finished breastfeeding.

Transaxillary

The transaxillary incision is made in the folds of the armpit tissue. Then, an endoscope (a small tube with a light and camera) will travel under the breast tissue to insert the implant. This technique gives less visibility to your breast tissue, which makes inserting the implant much more difficult. However, the greatest benefit to this technique is that you will not have a visible scar anywhere near your breasts; it will be hidden in the natural folds of the underarm. However, if there is any visible scarring, it may not be as easily concealed, especially in sleeveless tops or bathing suits. This incision is more appropriate for saline implants as it is smaller and allows the saline shell to pass through more easily than silicone implants, which are not as malleable. There is significantly more pain and a longer recovery time with this approach as well. The best candidates for this approach: patients with very small breasts who have very small areola and no natural breast crease, and those who do not want a small scar on their breasts.

Each of the incision sites and the corresponding surgical techniques has their own benefits. The technique that Dr. Taylor will use during your augmentation will be dependent on your specific procedure, the anatomy of your breasts, and the type of implants you desire. Prior to scheduling surgery, you will discuss the best type of technique for your needs during your consultation with Dr. Taylor.
